Iron, Sulfur and Brown Well Water: Treatment Options
What discoloration, iron staining and rotten-egg odors can indicate in a private well and how to choose treatment.
Why well water changes color
Brown or yellow water can result from iron, manganese, sediment, disturbances in the well or plumbing, and other conditions. Appearance alone cannot determine if water is safe to drink.
Iron staining
Orange-brown staining may accompany dissolved iron that oxidizes after exposure to air. The type and concentration of iron, water chemistry and household demand influence treatment choices.
Rotten-egg odors
A sulfur-like smell may involve hydrogen sulfide or other conditions in the water system. Whether odor appears in hot water only or throughout the home can help narrow the source, but testing and evaluation are still important.
Start with appropriate testing
Useful test parameters may include iron, manganese, pH, hardness and other contaminants based on circumstances. Bacteria testing is important when source protection is compromised or a sudden change raises concern.
Choosing filtration
Options may include sediment filtration, oxidation and backwashing media, activated carbon, pH correction and UV disinfection when appropriate. A treatment system should be designed for the measured water quality, required flow and maintenance needs—not selected solely by odor or color.
Frequently Asked Questions
